In 1969, Patrick joined the United States Army where he served for eighteen years active duty as a Hawk Fire Control Missile crewman; also seeing a year's service in Vietnam and six years in Germany. On February 21, 1986, he ended active duty and began serving with the Minnesota National Guard.

Following graduation, Patrick was employed at Boise Cascade Paper Mill in International Falls, Minnesota.
Patrick was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2720 and American Legion Post #122 of Deer River, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by a son, Micheal, on September 27, 1973 and his father, Robert, in 1975.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Carol; one daughter, Lindy; and two sons, David and James; his mother, Edith; two brothers, Daniel and Richard; a half-sister, Betty Hawes; and two half-brothers, Bud Hawes and Wayne Hawes.
Patrick died at Community Memorial Hospital in Deer River, Minnesota and is buried in Olivet Cemetery at Morse Township in Itasca County. No photo of grave marker is available at this time.
