    Newspaper article - Itasca Iron News, Coleraine, Minnesota - Apr 1945 – Corporal Ralph Carlson writes to his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carlson of Coleraine, that he has been on Okinawa, and has seen considerable of the island, which is quite pretty. Ralph says the people there farm every inch of ground – even the hillsides are terraced and cultivated. He was surprised to see rice growing in a field, like grain.

    Ralph Carlson was a student at Gustavus Adolphus College when he registered for the draft in February 1942. He was a life-long resident of Coleraine, Minnesota and married Florence Hachey in Minnesota in 1947. He was employed as an electrician for U.S. Steel. He was a member of the Taconite, Minnesota American Legion Post.

    Ralph Carlson died in Taconite, Minnesota and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Florence; two sons, Ralph and Kevin; two daughters, Barbara and Judith; his mother, Mrs. Gordon Wetherell; one sister, Mrs. Don (Carol) Severson; and two brothers, William and Leslie.
