Raymond enlisted in the United States Navy on July 5, 1943. After a year of training with the Navy Medical Corps, he spent his tour of duty in Hawaii and on Johnson Island in the South Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on March 27, 1945.

Raymond married Nancy (Day) Bongo on September 26, 1945. They lived in Grand Rapids, Minnesota where he farmed 20,000 laying hens and had a produce route that sold eggs throughout the Iron Range. After his wife's death, he moved to Bemidji, Minnesota where he met and married Eleanor (McLeod) Oftedahl on May 11, 1981. They wintered in Homosassa, Florida for 14 years and moved back to Bemidji, Minnesota permanently in 1995.
He was a member of St. Philip's Catholic Church in Bemidji, Minnesota and the Grand Rapids Knights of Columbus, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; daughter, Karen Mellott; two grandchildren; a stepson, Charles Bongo; two stepdaughters; and eight step-grandchildren.
