Ray joined the United States Navy the day after graduation and served aboard a ship in the Caribbean during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Ray moved to Houston, Texas when he was four. He was in Rerves Officers Training Corps in high school.
Ray married Trudi Goodwin in 1963. He worked as a salesman for building materials companies.
Ray moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1996 and remarried Trudi in 1998.
Ray suffered many years with kidney failure and COPD. He enjoyed The Food Network and would often work on special dishes--a real gourmet.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Ann Gram and Ronald Goodwin and a sister, Pat O'Sullivan.
Suvivors include his wife Trudi; stepsons, Jacob VanHelder and Andrew (Christina) VanHelder; a sister, Linnea (Arlan) Fouts; and a step-brother, Jeff Gram.
Ray died at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He was cremated.
