Dick Long moved from North Dakota to Baudette, Minnesota where he worked road construction. He was married to Marlys Mohs in 1950, prior to serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved to Grand Rapids in the late 1960s where he worked for Simons Trucking and Hammann Trucking, retiring in 1995. He married Mary (Humble) Cowan in 1983 and they lived in Blackberry, Minnesota until the spring of 2003 when they purchased a home in Pengilly.
Dick died at his home in Pengilly, Minnesota and is buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Deer River, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Mary; eight sons, Charlie Long, Dennis (Debra) Cowan, Darrell (Theresa) Cowan, Richard (Julie) Cowan, Doug (Kim) Cowan, Dean (Pam) Cowan, Mike Cowan, Keith (Teresa) Cowan; four daughters, Mona (David) Etter, Jeannie (Butch) Folk, Donna Thomas, Delores Key; twenty-eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harold, David and Floyd; a sister, Ruth (Joe) Kaiser; two sons, Jimmie Long and David Cowan; and two grandchildren.
