Robert Curtiss graduated cum laude from the University of South Dakota and Washington State University, with masters in geology & mathematics. Dr. Curtiss started work with the Atomic Energy Commission, locating uranium deposits suitable for nuclear weaponry. He was then promoted to Resident Engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers building dams – Oahe Dam in Pierre, South Dakota, the John Day Dam spanning the Columbia River, and the Upper and Lower Monumental Dams in Washington State and the Lower Granite Dam in the same region. He earned a degree in Divinity and became an ordained minister.
Dr. Curtiss died in Olympia, Washington and is buried in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Washington (Sec t, Site 884C). He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Cynthia Cundy Curtiss; daughter, Cindy Gibson; son, Dr. Curtiss J. Curtiss; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
