Robert served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years, having served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.

Robert grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He was united in marriage to Helga Griess on April 17, 1959, in Germany.
They moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1970 and Robert began working at Kordel Furniture as an appliance and furniture repairman.
He was a member of the VFW Post 1720, Jephthah Chapter #176 Order of Eastern Star, Itasca Masonic Lodge No. 208 A.F.&A.M., AAD Shrine, the American Legion Post 60 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 13, where he also was a volunteer driver for the Veterans Van.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Helga; brother, David; four sisters, Josephine Hunt, Reba Lee, Ginny Winkleman, and Charlotte Johnson.
Robert is survived by his son, Michael; brother-in-law, Willard Johnson; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews in Germany and the United States.
Robert passed away at Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and inurnment was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Section 20-A, Site 53)
