Robert enlisted in the United States Army on February 5, 1949. He served stateside until his discharge on February 4, 1950. On September 27, 1950, Robert was recalled to active duty by the United States Army and was sent to Korea where he took part in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged November 26, 1951.

Robert grew up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota where he attended school. He moved to the Twin Cities to work before enlisting in the United States Army.
He married Gloria Ray on September 25, 1950, in Crookston, Minnesota.
After his discharge on November 25, 1951, Robert returned to Crookston. He worked at the Coca Cola Bottling Company for several years and then at the Bridgeman Creamery. He was employed at Crookston Construction, Kelly Construction, and then at Eickhof Construction and in 1966 by Crookston Welding. Robert retired in 1990 as the shop foreman of the electric motor department. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Crookston, Minnesota.
Robert is survived by his wife, Gloria; four sons, Stephen, Larry, Timothy, and David; two daughters, Judy Hopkins and Sandra Gruhot; five brothers, Butler, Chester, Herman, John, and Doren; four sisters, Flora "Midge" Skinaway, Hattie Taggart, Ida Rahn; and Minnie Chandler; twelve grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were a grandchild, Thomas John Litzinger; his parents; five sisters, Flossie, Roseanne, Julia, Ruby and Rose; and two brothers, Elmer and Albert.
Robert died at this home in Crookston, Minnesota and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery at Crookston, Minnesota. (Memory Gardens, Block 1, Division F, Lot 41)
