Roland moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1973. He owned and operated Bender Shoes of Grand Rapids from 1973 to 1985, at which time he retired the ownership to his sons. Roland was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife, Angeline; sons Craig (Cindy) and Brian (Linda); daughter Karen (Joe) Sletten; and 5 grandchildren.
