While in the service he was a rifle coach at the Colorado School of Mines and was a ROTC instructor. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1980.

In 1960, Ronald enlisted in the United States Army and also was united in marriage to Marietta Lilgreen on November 4, 1960, in Salinas, California.
In 1981 he was a maintenance supervisor at Leisure Hills Care Center, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota retiring in 1999. He was instrumental in setting up Wildwood Township, Itasca County, serving on the board. He also served on the Itasca County Township Association. Ron was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and served as a trustee. He was a member of the Minnesota Emu Growers Alliance and the American Emu Association, where he was a former board member.
He is survived by his wife, Marietta; two daughters, Shelly (Rick) Espeland and Kay (Harlan) Berg; two sons, Ty (Denise) and Michael (Corrine); a sister, Patricia (Kenn) Fideldy; his mother, Martha Schack; and 13 grandchildren.
Buried in Harris Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot 3.22.3.8)
