Russell was a World War I veteran who saw action in France with the Canadian Army.

Russell was a retired Oliver Iron Mining division locomotive engineer, working in the Walker and King mines.
While recovering in England from wounds received in action in France, Russell met and married Hetty Brocklehurt on January 10, 1917. They returned to Canada in 1919 and came to the United States in 1922 to settle in the Grand Rapids, Minnesota area.
Russell retired in 1960.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Survivors are his wife, Hetty; a son, Russell; two daughters, Mrs. Conrad Howe and Mrs. Robert Steinhart; twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a brother and sister.
Russel died in the Itasca Memorial Hospital and is buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot I-C-34-07)
