    Russell grew up in Deer River, Minnesota and lived in Duluth, Minnesota since 1955.

    He owned the Sportsman Barber Shop on Fourth Street and shops in Woodland and the Plaza, as well as other locations. He was known as "Russ the Barber".

    Russell loved hunting, trapshooting and bowling. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Gnesen. He had been a member of the Barbershoppers and Proctor Moose and was a member of the West Duluth Legion Post.

    Russell married Elaine Kiltie on February 9, 1945.

    Russell was preceded in death by his brothers, Gordon and Lyle Elton; and a sister, Alberta Cater.

    He is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughters Cynthia (Jerald) Chesney, Pamela (Dennis) Foucault, and Claudia Cosner; sons Scott (Sue), Todd (Kay), Flynn (Barb), Joel, Rustee, and Jock; sisters Florence Himmler, Jessie Hobbs, and Joyce (Pinky) McCaughey; twenty-two grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

    Russell died in Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is buried in Noble Hill Cemetery at Fredenberg Township in St. Louis County.
