Following his discharge, Samuel returned to Itasca County, Minnesota. He served as Itasca County surveyor for 20 years and retired in 1960 when he moved to Coos Bay, Oregon. While there, he worked as city surveyor until retirement in 1974.
Survivors are three daughters, Gale LeCompte, Mrs. Kenneth (Barbara) Lanum, and Vicki Andrews; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel, who died in 1959.
