Thomas was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea.

Thomas was a social studies and history teacher for Independent School District #316 in Coleraine, Minnesota and later became a coach for Itasca Community College football, track and basketball programs. His 1956 basketball team won the National Junior College championship. He also operated a summer basketball camp for the college.
Thomas was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marble, Minnesota, the VFW of Pengilly, Minnesota, the American Legion of Nashwauk, Minnesota, and a former member of the Coleraine Knights of Columbus in Coleraine, Minnesota.
A son Andrew died in 1986. He is survived by his wife, Violet; a daughter, Joanna Dasovich Ukali; a brother, George "Yiddy" (Antoinette); and two grandchildren, Peter and Tom Dasovich.
Thomas died at the University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing, Minnesota and is buried in the Nashwauk Cemetery at Nashwauk, Minnesota.
