Tom received his discharge as a Corporal in 1970.

Tom grew up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
He moved with his family to Missoula, Montana in 1967.
After his discharge, Tom returned to Missoula, Montana where he was employed by Hamilton Lumber Company before joining the police department.
Tom was a member of the VFW and the Eagles Hellgate Lodge #383.
He was a thirteen year veteran of the police force, earning the rank of Police Sergeant, a member of the Police Protective Association, and had been honored for outstanding service by the Missoula Exchange Club.
Tom died after a three-year bout with leukemia,
He is survived by his parents, son, Matthew; daughters, Kelly Wivell and Tracy Staves; brother, James; and a sister, Allison Rattray.
A memorial service was held for Tom at Trinity Baptist Church in Missoula, Montana and he was cremated.
