Walter grew up in Boy River, Minnesota and later moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota. On June 9, 1967, Walt was united in marriage to Carol Zilbert in Sisseton, South Dakota. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1941-1945.
He retired from Cleveland Cliffs after 30 years of service, at which time he worked many side jobs at RAH Heating and Sheet Metal, Gibbs Wild Rice, Walters Electric and Marlon Café. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1720, Jacobson Community Church and Cohasset Community Bible Chapel. Walt loved to play guitar, playing for many years in the "Over the Hill Gang" and "Northwoods Opry". He entertained for many social and community events and was known as "The Man in Black". He loved "Blue Grass" and singing to the Lord. Walter was a loving father, grandfather and devoted husband to Carol for 37 years.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; three sons, Dennis (Lorna), Jerry (Sara), and Roger (Karla); one daughter, Diane (Kevin) Anderson; three grandchildren; five great-granddaughters; and two sisters, Jeanette Hodder and Mary Raines.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, George; his sister, Barbara; and his ex-wife, Thelma Nelson.
Buried in Harris Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot 3.23.2.6)
