    William attended elementary school in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He attended high school in Webster and Grantsburg, Wisconsin. He returned to Grand Rapids following graduation and worked for the Blandin Paper Company before serving in the United States Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy, he was married to Faye B. Schauls on December 22, 1945. They then moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota and he returned to work at the Blandin Paper Company where he retired in 1984 after 43 years. He served as president of the Papermill Employees Union and was an active volunteer with the local veterans organizations as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Military Order of Cooties where he served as seamsquirrel. He also served as a hockey coach and was instrumental in developing amateur hockey in the Grand Rapids area.

    He is survived by daughter, Judy (Paul) Dick; three sons, Lonnie, Steven (Janet), and Rockney "Rocky" (Diane); 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
